Kumara Sashti is celebrated in the month of Karthikai when Muruga was born followed by Laksharchana – chanting the glorious names of the Lord one lakh times. His wedding with Deivanai is celebrated on the fifth day of the Chithirai Brahmmotsavam and with Valli on the 9th day of the festival. In this temple, He has Lion also as His vahan belonging to Mother Shakti along with peacock and it is significant that the Lion is holding the peacock. Among the six army camps attributed to the Lord, He has the elephant as His vahan in Swamimalai, Tiruthani and in the Chennai Kumaran kundram temples. The main vehicle of Lord Muruga is peacock. Only the Kamandalam and Akshamala attributed to Him are in the circle.
He is before the sanctum sanctorum as an oval shaped idol without a form. Lord Brahmma sought the pardon of Lord Muruga for taking up the creation work though He was not qualified for the job. As Andar means ruler, the name Andarkuppan appears to be an appropriate name. As He came to this place as a poor little boy (Aandi), the place was called Aandiarkuppam which later changed as Andarkuppam. Lord appears as a child in the morning, a youth in midday and as an aged person in the evening. Saint Arunagiriar had sung the praise of the Lord in his celebrated Tirupugazh hymns. As He is appearing in a royal form, He is called Adhikara Murugan (Murugan with authority). Lord Bala Subramanya graces the devotees so mercifully without His weapons Vel, Vajram and Shakti. People pray for senior job positions, to shine in responsible positions they hold and for wise children. There are shrines for Lord Kasi Viswanatha, Mother Visalakshi and Lord Nataraja. Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka graces the devotees. The Vimana, tower above the sanctum sanctorum is of Ekadala design. Lord Muruga is praised as Adhikara Murugan. It is a different darshan to the devotees that Lord Muruga praised as Adhikara Murugan looks like a child in the morning, a youth in midday and aged in the evening. This is one of the Murugan temples glorified by Sri Arunagiri nadhar’s Thiruppugazh. This an ancient and very popular Murugan temple in this region. This is a small but very beautiful Temple with nice sculptures. Arunagirinathar visited various Murugan temples and on his way back to Tiruvannamalai, visited Vayalur and sung praises about Murugan.Sri Balasubramanya Swami Temple, Andarkuppam Tiruvallur district. He became a staunch devotee and composed Tamil hymns glorifying Murugan, the most notable being Thirupugazh. After ruining his health, he tried to commit suicide by throwing himself from the northern tower of Annamalaiyar Temple, but was saved by the grace of god Murugan. He spent his early years as a rioter and seducer of women. Literary mention Īrunagirinathar was a 15th-century Tamil poet born in Tiruvannamalai. The eleven-day Vaikasi Visakam during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May - June), Thai Poosam during the Tamil month of Thai (January - February), Panguni Uthiram during the month of Mar - Apr, Vaikasi Visakam, the birth star of Murugan during the month of May - June, Adi Kirthikai during the month of July/August, Thiru Karthikai during the month of oct/nov and Kanda shasti November are the most prominent festivals in the temple. There are weekly rituals like somavaram (Monday) and sukravaram (Friday), fortnightly rituals like pradosham, and monthly festivals like amavasai (new moon day), kiruthigai, pournami (full moon day) and sathurthi.
Each ritual comprises four steps: abhisheka (sacred bath), alangaram (decoration), naivethanam (food offering) and deepa aradanai (waving of lamps) for Kachabeswarar and Anjanatchi. The temple rituals are performed six times a day Kalasanthi at 6:00 a.m., Muthalam Kalam at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 12:00 a.m., Sayarakshai at 6:00 p.m, Rendam Kalam at 8:00 p.m. The temple priests perform the puja (rituals) during festivals and on a daily basis.
